1. Sremska Mitrovica
a. The port area consists of approximately 600 yards of earth embankment
on the north bank of the Sava River, on the south and southwest side of
of the town. At the western end, four barges can lie simultaneously
alongside a steeply sloping earth bank 18 feet high topped by a stone
parapet and backed by a road. Four sets of narrow stone steps ran down
from the road to the water at approximately 80-yard intervals. Loading
is done by manual labor across wooden gangplanks placed from the steps
to the barges.
b. The eastern half of the north bank, at which four barges can lie
simultaneously, has a timber loading station and the loading is done
by the use of wooden planks direct from the river bank to the barges.
There is no meshanical equipment or a railroad on the north bank.
c. On the south bank of the Sava, opposite the tooen, there is a small river
shipyard with horizontal slipways for six 700-ton barges. At the end of
May 1950 there were five 700-ton barges under repair on the slipways and
a double row of three 700-ton and two 1, 000-ton barges in the water in
front of the shipyard. The tug LIKA and the dredger TAAIS were also in
the shipyard area.
2. Sabac
a. The river port office is located on the right bank of the Sava River.
There is a stone quay about 300 yards long, served by a single track
narrow gauge railroad some 10 yards from the river bank. The only
mechanical equipment available is a small crane of approximately one-ton
capacity.
b. The Zorka chemical factory has a quay and a 60-yard stone jetty carrying
a narrow gauge railroad track. There is a crane with a capacity of one
to two tons mounted on the end of the jetty.

bank opposite the Begej canal lock at which four barges can lie
simultaneously. At the south end of the bank there is a 30-yard
metal jetty on which a small crane is located. Loading from barges
alongside the bank is by manual labor with the aid of planks and a
metal gangplank.
b. Early in May 1950 the only vessels in the port consisted of three
1,000-ton barges lying alongside the bank and a derelict pontoon
dredger moored below the railroad bridge.
4. Osijek
a. There is a small timber loading station on the south bank of the
Drava River above the winter harbor, which has an earth embankment
to accommodate three or four barges. Loading is done by manual labor
as there is no mechanical equipment available.
Vukovar
a. The port area on the right bank of the Danube River immediately below
the town has an earth embankment along which five or six barges can
lie simultaneously, and is served by a single track railroad branch
line.
b. The upstream portion of the port area consists of a timber loading
station alongside which three 700-ton barges were lying early in May
1950. Loading is carried out by manual labor. At the downstream end
of the bank there is one 5 to 10-ton crane.
6. Slavonski Brod
as The main port area is located on the left bank of the Sava River between
the railroad bridge and road bridge. This has approximately 1,200 yards
of earth embankment with a 40-yard long stone jetty on which a small.
crane is mounted. Barges also lie alongside the opposing right hand
bank just above the railroad bridge.
b. The port was extremely quiet in early May and only two 700-ton barges
were seen there.
7. Sisak
a. The main port area is situated above the road bridge across the Kupa
River on the west side of the town. The left bank has about 150 yards
of sloping stone quay, in which steps have been cut in six places to
facilitate loading. Water level was about 8 yards below the top of
the quay in early May 1950.
b. The quay is served by railroad sidings and has one 2 to 3-ton crane
at the downstream end. Three 700-ton barges were seen alongside the
quay. Barges also lie alongside the opposing right hand bank, which
has an earth embankment without facilities of any kind.
c. The oil refinery, located on the right bank of the Kupa about 1,9400
yards above the point where it joins the Sava River, has a stone
quay approximately 200 yards long.
