SUPPLEMENT TO,
REPORT NO.
1. On 1 July South KKorean troops were holding their main positions along the Han
River. Although about 100 North Korean troops managed to cross the Han and
were scattered in the Kimpo-Yongdungpo area, there was no large-scale break-
through. A force of about 500 North Koreans crossed the Han River to the
Seoul Airfield* three times on 1 July, but each time was driven back across
the river. The airfield is now a no-man's land; South Korean forces are unable
to occupy it because of its vulnerability to artillery fire.
2. In the bridgehead area between railway and highway bridges over the Flan River,
about 150 North Korean troops held the flat ground at the foot of the hills
opposite the bridge abutments on the south side of the river. These troops
were forced back across the river by South Korean forces three times on the
night of 30 June, but strong artillery and mortar fire and the lack of en-
trenching tools prevented the South Koreans from holding the bridgehead area,
and it was occupied by the North Koreans on 1 July.
North Korean construction of large barges capable of ferx ing tanks and
trucks across the river was being carried out 1 mile east of Sobinggo
(127-00, 37-32).
4. South Korean pilots at Suwon who had flown over the Han River area stated
that about seven North Korean trucks, previously reported as advancing on
the Suwon area, were grouped on the south side of the river, with no signs
of attempting an advance. However, the South Korean G-2 continues to insist
that these trucks are moving south on Suwon.
5,
President Syngoan RHI is near tiokpo (126-22, 34-48). A Korean official
has been sent to bring him to Taejon or to prevent his further flight.
Ccei ent. It is not clear whether this refers to Kimpo Airfield,
!which is the main airfield for the Seoul area, or to a small airstrip on
the south edge of the Flan Liver, situated between Seoul and Kimpo.
