THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
At Jilava priscrt, where prisoners are held up to nine months before
trial, the ordinary prison fare is sauerkraut and dry bread., Thirty
prisoners are held in a single unventilated cel.l under bright electric
:11 hts at all times. The toilet consists of a barre:l. which is emptied
once very twenty-four hours..
2, At the Pites i,i prison only six prisoners are confined to one cell. These
prisoners are not allowed to see members of their families for one year
after arrival. Intellectuals among the prisoners are not, oerraitted any
r2ading ruatter. They were previously given Marxist works to read, but
frequently they destroyed or (Mutilated the volumes,, Prisoners are per-
mitted only ten minutes exercise weekly. The director of the prison
often tours the prison while drunk, inflicting punishment on the prisorisrs,,
