The plastic explosive produced in the Kamnik gunpowder factory is a German invention, introduced to the factory by German engineers employed there. 2. The explosive is referred to by several names, such as Dualin, Sebastin, and Seranin. Pyroxylin, especially prepared (cotton dipped in3a mixture . of saltpeter or azote and sulphuric acid*), dissolves in aytroglycerine and produces a jelLy-like or rubber substance which is extremely in- sensitive to mechanical shock and is not affected by water. It has a destructive power greater than that of dynamite or compressed pyroxylin. This preparation is used as a gelatine explosive. 3. If less than seven to eight percent pyroxylin is dissolved in nitro-- glycerine, a syrup is obtained which requires a smaller amount of porous powder in order to produce dynamites which are better conservers of nitro- glycerine under pressure and in water than earthy dynamites. Explosives ? thus obtained can be modified so that, in addition to an explosive effect, they can also exert pressure.
