2, The efforts and activities of the unions led by Communist labor leaders

Goneral of the Union de Obreros Zapate-ros, and Rafael Pena ifontes, former
leader of the CAD and now a porrer in the Union do Trabajadores Ferrocarri1t os,
were also turned toward the election of .Tinendez. Although these labor leaders
do not foresee that Menendez will be able to wrest tho election from Major
Uscar Dsorio and his Partido ,.ovolucionrrio de Unificacion Democratic.-A, they
feel that the election campaign has p 'ov-1ded them vrith an oppc rtunityy to gain
much needed political experience and that the advances they have made in
several workers' unions, particularly the UTF,* will pay handsome dividends

Jose Gavidia, was established to develop further the gains already realized
by Salvadoran Communists in the Partido Accion :ienovadora (PAR), as the result
of their support of PAR candidate Jose Ascencio 1'Sanendeza
