1. The so-called MVD War Institute was located on Leninc;rad High-
way, MOSCOW, about 1,100 feet west of Belorussian Railroad
Station and about 1,600 feet east of the aeronautics .Lnsti-
tute. it was In a fare E-shaped building, hav:inr~ a frontage of
abput 330 feet an d three win.is about 150 feet each.
2. The institute was under the Ministry of the Interior. it
conducted courses for i:VD headquarters and uni officers,
from first lieutenant to colonel, between the ages of 30 - 35
years. During the six-month courses the officers were organ-
ized into ;lasn-room units of about 150 officers. There were
usual ly four or five such units at a time.
3., - he institute was headed by a 7enleit, and. eight other : ene-
rals were instructors. The ^tudents were regular officers,
some Heroes of the Soviet Union. They were billeted
in the institute in 20-man rooms.
4. Besides lecture rooms and quarters, e printing shop ( in the
basement), a foreign-lan uage school, and special branch-of-
service sections (artillery, enninecr, and si*nal sections)
were in the institute build inn. A tar-et range was behind
the bu .lding.
5. It, was believed that the trainees were primarily instructed
in tactical and pol ltlcal ma'.ters. They often left for tec-
t idal walks.
A fzuard unit of about two hundred rIVD troops armed with
pistols and a motor pool with a few passenger curs and about
40 truc':s, mostlyy. ZIS, Molotov.,anc Studebaker makes, were
assi,r;ntd to the Institute.
An MJT) administration office was possibly located in the build-
ing, too.
