THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
I. The Zorka chemical factory at Sabac, largest chemical plant in the Balkans,
occupies a large area east of Sabac on the Sabac-Obrenovac road. Originally
established in Subotica, the factory was moved in 1933 to Sabac because
the Royal Yugoslav Army General Staff considered its site at Subotica too
close to the Yugoslav-Hungarian frontier. A small section of the factory,
then producing four--fifths of all superphosphates and sulfuric acid
manufactured in Yugoslavia, remained in Subotica0
2. Since the war, the factory at ,Sabac has been reorganized, its war damages
repaired, and facilities enlarged under supervision of Engineer Milan
Todorovic, Director of the General Direction of Yugoslav Chemical
Industries. Two large sections for the manufacture of sulfuric acid
have been added. The Zorka factory now e;5,ploys about 3000 workers0
Engineer Jovan Ilic, a Communist, is plant director.
3. The present output of the Zorka factory is not known, but in 1940 it pro.
d:uced. 14,000 tons of sulfuric acid and the same amount of copper sulfate
per year. Pyrite, the most important raw material used, is shipped to the
factors by rail from Majdenpek, in eastern Serbia.. The Zorka factory now
manufactures the following chemicals, a percentage of which are exported
25X1 to the Balkan countries
copper sulfate
Sulfuric acid
Superphosphate
Cyanamide
Sodium sulfate
Alum
Barium sulfate
~3arium carbonate
Carbon disulfi.d.e' (Schwefelkohlenstoff )
