THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
25X1
1. The Chilean government has ordered the newspapers to present the 5 June riot
in Santiago as part of a plot to overthrow democratic Cover cents throughout
America. The principal newspapers have complied with this order and have
stressed this theme in reporting the incident.
25X1
2. the 5 June meeting* was a part of a plan of the Communist
Party of Chile PCCh) to hold a series of flash meetix>gs, but the Co? tnists
were completely unprepared for the events which occurred. They plan, however,
to take full advantage of the incident and use it to intensify their agitation
25X1 for unification of the workers and the reconstruction of the old Confedora, cion
de Trabajadores do Chile (CTCh). No further unrest is yet apparent.
25X1 Corn.. Although government statements accuse fascists as well as Corp. t
nun ets, the meeting had been planned by the Comunist-doninated group of the
CTCh. When permission to hold their meeting in the Santiago auditorium was
denied the group at the last ninute, Coriraunist and Frente Nacional Donocratico
(FI7D) leaders in the crowd organized a march to a nearby plaza where orators
attacked the Gonzalez Vidola government. The crowd numbering approximately 3000
began insulting and throwing rocks at the Carabineros who had been sum oned to
preserve order. In the ensuing panic and fights approximately 30 persons were
injured and one soldier was killed.
