COUNTRY Chile/Argentina SUBJECT Activities of the Argentine Diplomatic Corps PLACE ACQUIRED DATE OF INF 25X1A6a to Nestor Lima Quintana, the Cultural Attache to the Argentine Embassy in Santiago, is reported to have. stated categorically that retired Chilean General Jorge Bergnno Menses had requested financial aid from Peron prior to the abortive military conspiracy discovered in Chile during November 1948,D* Peron avoided supplying any funds directly, but according to source, arranged for Berguno Meneses to make some highly successful busi- ness deals in Argentina with. the understanding that the proceeds were to be used for the proposed revolutionary movement in Chile. When the plot was discovered by the Chilean police,'Berguno 169neses decided to keep this money for himself, and he is allegedly living very tranquilly in Buenos Aires at the present-time. 2. Lima Quintana also stated that a group of unidentified members of the re- Agrarian Labor Party recently visited him at the Argentine Embassy and quested two million Chilean pesos for the founding of a new newspaper which they claimed would dedicate itself to opposing the present Chilean government. It was proposed that the paper carry out, a pro-Argentine propaganda campaign at the same time. Lima Quintana stated that the Argentine Embassy refused to advance this money. 3. Lima Quintana reported that he had received instructions to return for Buenos Aires to present a verbal account of the activities of the Argentine diplomatic corps in Chile, especially those of Ambassador Julio Argentine Lopez Muniz. As was previously reported,, Lima Quintana submitted a report harshly criticizing Lopez Muniz and his failure to carry out the diplomatic mission assigned to him in Chile. * Cf. n C?.
