The sixty'-odd revolutionaries who entered Guatemala from Mexico under the
leadership of Dr. Gustavo Adolfo Tranguay on 6 April 1949 were reported on
7 Aril to be in headlong flight for Mexico. They had robbed. the custom
house at El Carmen of 31,000 quetzales and held the tom of Malacatan for
twentyr-four hours. The rebels abandoned their equi. ent on the Finca
Argentina, in the municipality of San Pablo near the Mexican border. The
Cmte..al?an government is in complete control of the situation.
C went. Dr. Tranguay was thwarted in an attempt to overthrow the
Arevalo go vernment in September 1947 and itm!ued irtely set about preparing a
second attempt. Ile subsequently, transferred the base of his revolutionary
activities to Mexico, and stated it Jenuiary 1943 that he intended to raise
a group of 150 to 200 men as an invasion force. Ile was confident that the
Guatemalan people would welcome his revolutionary band and aid him in over-
throwing the Arevalo regime. He stated th',.t his plans were completed., and
that he lac1ced only the necessary financial support, amounting to 430,000.
