1s The airfield at Gilgit was formally opened on 22 February 1949 with the
landing of one Dakota aircraft. As this airstrip is entirely a sandy one.,
with marshes in the middle, it will not take heavy traffic. The northeast
end of the field is reported open for traffic, but the southwest and of
the field is closed.
25X1X6 2. Air Vice Marshal Atcherly and Brigadier Sher Khan, alias General Tarek*,
commander of the Azad Kashmir forces attended the opening of the airfields.
^ 3. It is reported that a proposed airstrip at Baltit (Hunza) is also being

Comment. General Tarek is probably identical with
Hera ar c, a'as Colonel Akhbar Khan, who is reported to
be on the active list of the Pakistan army.
