CLASSIFICATION 25X1 A2 Approved For ReI F .OttMWD EfMIRAt M-00457 OA4z CD NO. COUNTRY Indonesia OMr 1 Wf6 DATE DISTR. 30 CH 1949 SUBJECT John Andu and the Indonesian American Trading Compare NO. OF PAGES i 25X1A2 PLACE 25X1A6a I NO. OF ENCLS. ACQUIRED DATE OF IN et1Jp (LISTED BELOW) SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. lo John Andu, who was formerly employed by the Netherlands Information Bureau 25X1 X6 in New York, is now one of the principal Indonesian officials of the Indones- ian American Trading Coimpany, a newly established import and export company a'b 39 Broadway, New York. Andu, whose employment was presumably terminated after the Republic of Indonesia proclaimed its independence on 17 August 1945, is now unpopular with the Indonesians. They believe that he cooperates as 'formerly with the Dutch and is therefore unsuited to become an Indonesian representative in such an enterprise. 2 The Indonesians are also displeased with Anduss unilateral action in choosing the name "Indonesian American Trading Company' with its similarity to that of the American Indonesian Corporation. Apparently no relationship exists between those two companies. The Indonesian American Trading Company was allegedly established as a result of the joint efforts of American and Indo- nesian citizens, and is endeavoring to obtain more American support as evi- denced by an advertisement appearing in the New York Journal of Commerce, From an Indonesian point of view John Andu is a dubious character. He has counterbalanced what appears to be sympathy for the Republican cause by doing work which is detrimental to the Indonesian Republic Delegation in the United States. 3. Andu has stated that the company is at the organizational stage and not yet operates, The Indonesians consider its status to be doubtful and have ad- vised their officials and merchants against any dealings with the comparW.
