the current Argentine printers' strike. A bank employees' strip is expected
this wok and other strikes later. Over 1000 printers have been arrested by
the police. Another source attests that the arrests total 3000, including
many Communists and `?ocialists.
2. The continuing tense situation centers around the army's demand that Mrs. Peron
be removed from political activity. Nationalists led by Generals Oscar R. Silva
and Sun Filomeno Velazco, and supported by General Humberto Sosa 2 aolina, are
insistent in this demand. Governor Domingo A. tercante and certain other
political figures are supporting Ira. Peron. Aira. Peron, with her brother Juan
Duarte, have departed for Cordoba, Argentina.
3. President Peron-recently requested Vice President tiortensio Quijano to serve
as President for three or four months. Quijano, who foresees a split in Peronista
ranks and fears increasing unrest with possible disturbances, refused the position.
comment, The present serious Argentine situation is further complicated by
the ab ence of newspapers. A deluge of fantastic rumors circulated by the political
opposition to create confusion and unrest has made it ainost impossible to dis-
