1 Chriatiaan (Chris) Smit, alias Hans Klein, was born in Amsterdam, Holland
31 November 1907 and lives at 77-1 13oerstraat, Amsterdam.
2a Smit, a member of the Central and Executive Committees of CPN, heads the Training
Bureau of CPN and is responsible for the Comueanist training and indoctrination of
both old and new Party members, as viol], as for subversive ftadrefl training,, He
was specially trained in :.vacow as a propagandist and speaks frequently at both
secret and open meetings.
In addition to these activities, &it is editor-in-chief of the Carom unist propagand
weekly, Voor waartts (Forward) and an editor of the Carx.:unist monthly Po itiek en
Cultuur - oltiics and Culture). He was defeated in the 1931 elections when he
was Cojrm-unist candidate for the Amsterdam Corn uYi ty Council. In 1932, he was
connected in various capacities with the Communist Youth Group Do 2auier (The
Sower),, Five years later, Smit was active recruiting volunteers or the Spanish
Republican Armies.
In 1940 Snit was a member of the Central Committee of CPN at which time he took
over the Stichting Uitgeverij an Boekhandel Pe asua (Pe zus Publ,;hers and Book-
sellers Foundation). This organization was 1 qu dated by the Germans under the
occupation, but reestablished by Snit in 1945 who became its treasurer.
