Scholten has recently been raised to the rank of Major General to assume the title of Territorial Co=andant of Sumatra. His staff headquarters is at Medan. His command consists of four infantry brigades;i two reserve and two auxiliary infantry battalionsm four field artillery , two field howitzer, and one medium artillery batteries; one engineer battalion of four companies;, and two field engineer companies. 2. The local commandant for Medan and Be]awan-Deli is Lieutenant Colonel T.J.W.F.bi. Supheert. The commandant of the military police at Medan is Major van Swieten a 30 i?a An auxiliary reserve infantry battalion, called the Barisan Pengawal, is now being organized.. 27 sergeants and 23 corporals have arrived in Medan for the cadre, and the purpose of this new unit tsp. ll be to maintain-peace and order in Medan while the brigades are engaged in the interior. There is one brigade of infantry in Palembang and one brigade of infantry in southern Sumatra. There axe two battalions of infantry in Padang; beyond Padang and surrounding it is a full brigade with artillery and engineer companies, all motorized and well- supported with tanks. East Indonesia 14 July 1918 6. In East Indonesia, the commandant of troops, Colonel Scheffelaar, has his headquarters at Makassar. There are four infantry battalions, four field batteries, four trench mortar companies, two heavy machine gun companies, and one tank company. The total number of troops is about 11,500 man. 7. On Halmaheira,there is one company of infantry based at Ternate. On Ceram, Ambon, and Boerne there is one infantry battalion and supporting arm. On Bali, there are two infantry companies. On Lombok, there is one infantry company. On Soembawa, there is one infantry company. 9. The senior naval officer of Fast Indonesia is Commander F.B. Veenstra, whose headquarters is at Makassar. His command includes 'a marine infantry battalion,. quartered at Makassar, one destroyer, and four sloops. He also has three naval planes.
