1. The state of the former tV.1ehrmacht barracks in "littenberp;/Elba (F.37)
is as follows`:
a. Tauentzin Kaserne
This barracks was converted into a military hospital a few weeks
ago and then suddenly evacuated. At the end of April 1948, an
infantry advance party arrived in the barracks to prepare them
for occupation by infantry units which wore expected to arrive
shortly.
b. Beeseler Kaserne and Flak Kaserne
These two barracks were occupied by a tank reginont which was
equipped with Joseph Stalin tanks only.
c. Briickenko pf Kasern~,?
This installation ra$ occupied by units of the Soviet Air Force.
2. The following two compounds in l:ittenberg were also solely Soviet-
occupied:
a. The fenced-in area oS'f the T AlEaann Strasse (formerly Adolf
Hitler-Strasse), previously occupied by Soviet families.

3. In view of the serious la:;;k of accommodation in the town and the in-
tended strenrtheninf: of t;e -arrison, Russian dependents have been
ordered to leave. The majority of Soviet fa3.lies have` already returned
to the USSR.
4. The total Soviet garrison t strength is at a minimum estimate .5,000 men.,
By the end of May 1948, :yl.h the arrival of now troops in the Tduentzin
Kasi~.rne, it will be increa,,-d to at least 8,000 men. The Soviet Arria
personnel presently located in ,,i tenberg is well-disciplined and well-
equipped. At tacks on the c.i aril population are rare and are sev-rely
punished.

6. The Koaendatura is situated in the Stadthaus, the Commandant
being Lt. Colonel Hanc?elsmarm.
