The electric locomotives seized by the Russians in 1946 are still at Brest-
Y.itovak. The Russians have shown no inclination to convert them to the Rw-
Sian gauges 50X1-HUM
There are only five locomotive brigades still in the Russian Zoned, All the
others, approximately. 700 locomotives, have 'been dissolved and the locomotives
returned to the economy of the Russian Zone. A sma11 number of these have been
sold to Poland.

Some Type 52 steam engines have been converted to the Russian gauge. This
process involved the mov- outwards of the cylinders by means of plates
fastened to the chassis had the fitting of new axles. 7he Russians have now
given up this prractice.
Early in 1948 there was a meeting of the Railroad Directorate attended by
General. Kvashnin. ' T e President of RBD Halle requested permission to start
re-electrification. This was absolutely declined by the General who gave
"strategical grounds" as the reason for his refusal,
