(LISTED BELOW) SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. ? THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION FOR THE RESEARCH USE OF TRAINED INTELLIGENCE ANALYSTS 1. Paul Sebestyen, Under-Secretary in the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recently made a tour of inspection of several Hungarian legations following the recent purges in the Hungarian diplomatic service. Only five members of the old diplomatic service survived the purge. 2. According to Sebestyen, the series of purges were much more radical than the Hungarian Communist Party originally contemplated. Only markedly anti-Communist elements were. sla*od for elimination, but the Soviets intervened through the politcal?police and the Political Department of the War Ministry and demanded thgt a large proportion of the diplomat s be dismissed. I. was said that pominent Communists, such as George Heltai of the Political Section ?f the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were shocked by the ruthlessness of the Russian demands. 3. Sebestyen stated that he submitted his own resignation but the Communists refused to accept it. His position is extremely vulnerable, he said, as he was the author of many treaties between Hungary anc' Mimi Gera yo 4. Sebestyen disclosed that the Russians are demanding a rebuilding of the Hungarian Army, a subject which is becoming the favorite topic in current Comnuni.st propaganda. The liquidation of resistance on the part of churches is to be the second political target, and after this aim is ac- hieved, the Communists plan to proceed with the collectivization of agriculture.
