PAGES SUPPLEMENT The.break in diplomatic relations between Chile and Yugoslavia, between Brazil and the USSR, and between Chile and the USSR, coupled with the current Argentine attitude toward Communism, has helped to shake the morale of many of the local pro-Communist Slavs. The previously reported attit- ide of the police authorities in refusing permits for the holding of dances and festivals by different Communist-dominated Slav clubs and societies, has had a contributory effect. 25X1A2g 2. The local Slav Communist leaders are trying to combat the lowering of morale by sending representatives to the different clubs and societies affiliated, with the Slav Union of Argentina with orders to increase membership and to broaden the scope of pro-Soviet activities. Little success has been achieved to date, and Slav Communist activities in Argentina are considered to be at a virtual standstill. Many of the Slav "fellow travellers" and Communists believe it best to do nothing at present in the hope that Argentine official wrath will be averted.. 25X1 A6a ommenta The local o+lav Communists and "fellow travellers" are afraid tha hares repressive measures will soon be taken against them. Their leaders, however.. made preparations several months ago to work clandestincsly in case of necessity. It is believed that, should the goverment take strong measures against the known Communist or Communist--dominated organizations, the Slav Communists will continue their activities under cover of some of the "cultural" and "artistic" Slav clubso This document contains informat letter o1 13 Octo CONFIDENTIAL in accord Director ( t affecting the national defens e United "tates within th ng of the Espionage Act .c.C. 31 and 32 as emende s transmission or the re on of its contents in any 1: o an unauthorized person is rohibited by law.
