Former Grove rno:r Teixeira issued on 5 May .946 a decree (D ploria
No., 93-3) that the ex1n,tirtg opium dens whozo o era .tio
had until that date been allowed by the 31acao Gover=nment must
close down and that the sr?ioking and the trading of opium except
for medicinal purposes were forbidden. The reason fo.?:r this action.
was probably pressure made by the Kuomintang,. Since about ton
percent of the income was derived.from opium, the government

total income for that year. The expented income in 1911.6 was

On 15 August of this year the Macao Government publicly demon-
strated its intention to stamp out opium smoking. Large quantities
of seized opium with much e iulpmeanzt used in the cooking of re.rw
opiiunt were heaped up on the Recreation Ground at- the Rua de Praia
Grande and burned in the presence of. the. anti-opium committee, corn-
prised of commissioner of Police Captain Salgado, Colonial Treasurer,
Siraoe s de Abreu., and Interpreter of the Civil Affairs Tfureau,
Jose Lopez.. Captain Salgado stressed the sincerity on the, part
of the Portuguese Goverrnr!ent in era d.icating opium smoking .while
announcing severe penalties for transgressors.
