have been eetabliohed by Olga Balabanov, wife of a Bulgarian diplomat0
liellarlye the Italian Professor Eerie? Damiani, teacher of Bulgarian 1 iterature
et the Rowan institute, went to Sofia on his own initiative to teach Italian
letters there. He Wnritea without a salary from either the Italian or Bulgarian
*eornments. Whon the Bulearian isevernment set up an Italian langaage faculty
nefore the war, Daniana was invited to head the department in Sofia, but he
as compelled by othee dutiel to refuse lb returned to Rome and founded the
res3gariae Life, a magesine which was quite aucceesfe!.
2. An '16:a/o-Bulgarian lasoolation In Rome had also been active for years, founded
tw a group of students and by the Bulgarian colony without the intervention
of the two governments* Among those who were president in the peel; are Damiani,
Professors Ettore Lo Gatto and Eugenio Morelli. All Bulgarian cultural assooia-
i;ions and socities in Rome were suspended because of the war. The course in
Bulgarian language and literature at the University of Rome, however, is still
being given.
3. Dr, Ivan Ivanov, the Bulgarian representative to Rome, intends to resuscitate
theca various associations for propaganda purposes to win the sympathy of the
Italians for the present Bulgarier regime. Ivanov recently called a meetingof
the Bulgarian colony in Rome to elect officers for a new association. The can-
didates were chosen by Ivenovenovsere opposed by the colony which refusedt
vote. Ivanov nevertheless appointed his candidates; among them are members
of the Bulgarian diplomatic corps whose presence in such an association is
Irregular. The officers of the new Bulgarian Aesooiesion in Italy are as follows:
President; Dr. Boo Goepodinov, a 65 year old veterinary.
He has lived in Italy for more than 26 years
and, is considered well-to-do and anti-Communist.
Vice Presidents Dr, Ghencio Anghelaw, a well-to-do pharmacist
in touch with Yugoslays. Be is a Communist*
Seezetarys Dimitri Tomalevski, a Bulgarian Legation employee
and mereber of the Conmunist Party.
Dima Kovaceva-Marceni, a resident of Italy for
more than 20 years. She manages a shoe factory
and is in touch with Italian communiets.

4. Ivanov also proposed forming a Control Committee, but the plan failed since
Dr. Jahko Peatr7, a Communist, refused the chairmanship of the Committee.

in the homeland. Ivanov has warned him not to leave the A!mooiation and to take
full responsibility for the founding of theorganization.
