Approval of Minutes 4 June' Meeting (IAC-M-292) Approved as written. In this connection, after referring to item 4 Mr. Kent noted that he had communicated with Mr. Cumming and that they were attempting to work out a solution with respect to the proposed NIE on Resistance Intelligence. 2. Review of Crisis Situations a. Watch Committee Report No. 3 57 b. Other Crisis Situations Mr. Cumming then invited the members' attention to the fact that the electoral returns in Lebanon thus far appeared to be generally favorable to the U'S. The members also exchanged views on recent developments in Jordanian-Egyptian relations, especially the possible extent to which King Hussein may have acted with the prior knowledge and approval of King Saud in expelling certain Egyptian personnel from Jordan. Mr. Cumming stated that the problem of French-Tunisian relations continued to bear watching and discussed in some detail with the members certain factors affecting this situation. After stating that he planned to brief the NSC on this situation, the Chairman indicated that he might contact Mr. Cumming again on this matter and asked General Schow to furnish certain order of battle information. Mr. Cumming referred to recent reports regarding Yemen and exchanged views with the .members on various aspects of this situation, especially the political orientation of the Imam and the question of Soviet Bloc arms shipments to Yemen. 3. NIE 31-57 Yugoslavia's Policies and Prospects a. Approved. b. Noted the post-mortem on this estimate. In this connection, the Chairman referred to deficiencies in certain types of information on Yugoslavia, particularly on pro-Soviet elements within the Yugo- slav Communist party and on the attitudes of the general populace in Yugoslavia, and discussed with the members possible means of over- coming these and various other deficiencies. General Schow, General Lewis and Admiral Frost commented on present arrangements and certain problems with respect to channeling relevant information through military attaches, especially data from MAAG sources. Mr. Cumming also referred to the role of an Ambassador as coordinator of information obtained by various members of the country team and the Chairman suggested that Mr. Cumming attempt to ascertain the nature and timing of the latest instruction sent to our Ambassador in Belgrade pertinent to this matter. NIE 11-3-57 Probable Intelligence Warning of Soviet Attack on the US Through Mid-1960 After discussing this draft estimate the members agreed to defer action for one week, during which the IAC representatives were directed to reconsider certain aspects of this paper (particularly Section III, A) in the light of comments by General Lewis and other members, and submit any proposed revisions for IAC consideration. Unless objection is raised by a member at the next regular meeting of the IAC, the Secretary proposes .to release to USIA NIE 31-57, "Yugoslavia's Policies and Prospects," and SNIE 100-7-57, "Probable Sino-Soviet Reactions to US Deployment of Nuclear Weapons Systems," both dated 11 June 1957.
