Meetings on Current Economic Policy Developments in Communist Countries Toward the end of FY 1966, the activities of the Subcommittee were expanded to include a series of meetings on current economic policy developments in Communist countries. The first of these meetings -- on Communist China -- was held on 29 June 1966. Three more meetings were held in FY 1967: on Yugoslavia, 23 Novem- ber 1966; on the WSR, 3 May 1967; and on Czechoslovakia, 28 June 1967. An average of about 25 persons attended these meetings. The format of the meetings was,. (a) presentation of a short background paper by a .senior analyst in the field; (b) comments by each subcommittee member in turn; and (c) general discussion. 10p Evaluation of the Role of the Subcommittee The Subcommittee serves a useful function in its ability to evaluate proposals for external economic research on an ad hoc basis. It also provides a formal mechanism through which the community can undertake coordination of certain economic activities such as exchange proposals, NIE post mortems, etc. As for the series of meetings on current economic policy developments in Communist countries, the subcommittee feels that the meetings have led to some lively and enlightening exchanges. Any further extension of activities by the Subcommittee, however, should be carefully weighed in the light of the very high "opportunity cost" of the members, time. B. Future Program of the Subcommittee The Subcommittee intends to pursue its present course. The series of discussion meetings described above will be continued for at least the next fiscal year. C. Change in Membership Effective June 1967, Michael C. Kenney, Jr. replaced William C. Andrews as Depertment of the Army member of the Subcommittee. f 25X1A9a.
