CONSIDERATION OF EIC-R16-S3, "A SUMMARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE; AN13 TRAN5110F.T OF GOMMUNIST CHINA, 1961": The report, prepared by the two responsible subcommittees, was re- viewed on a page-by-page basis. A number of modifications and revisions were proposed and accepted. There was general agreement that the report would be of unusual interest because of recent developments. The Com- mittee expressed its appreciation to the authors for their efforts in pro- ducing a good report. The Chairman noted that the annual survey listing.of internal and ex- ternal economic research projects on the Sino-Soviet Bloc and selected non-Bloc areas for calendar year 1961 had recently been disseminated. The Chairman announced that the Annual Report to the U5IB of the Economic Intelligence Committee covering activities during Fiscal Year 1962 would be disseminated to the Committee for its approval during July. The Chairman mentioned the consideration at the USIB level regarding possible disestablishment of some of the Committees of the USIB. The Coordination Staff report on Committee structure of the USIB recommended that the EIC be retained. The members of the Committee expressed the belief that the ETC mechanism continues to serve a useful function in the interests of the intelligence community and the USIB. DEPARTMENT OF STATE SUGGESTION REGARDING A COORDINATED STUDY ON USSR TRADE The Department of State representative suggested that the EIC issue each year a coordinated and summary study on Soviet trade. Several members indicated that such a study would be warranted and, at the Vice Chairman's suggestion, it was agreed that the possibility of producing such a study would be explored. PROPOS I? ON REPORT A$RQAD The Chairman brought to the attention of the members a draft announcement, developed by the Coordination Staff, of the State-Defense agreement for reporting overt collection abroad of economic intelligence.
