THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. Cheb (Eger) is a Czech border city that had a population of approxi- 50X1
mately 12,000 persons in 1948. Its industries consisted of the
"Iska" factory gee No. 11 on Enclosure A7 and the Municipal Gas
Works gee No. 10 on Enclosure A7. The Eska factory manufactured
bicycles and could be described as being rather modern. At the time of my
departure in 1948 approximately 2,000 persons worked in this factory,
which operated two shifts daily. The Municipal Gas Works worked three
shifts daily and employed over 1,000 persons. The gas works manufactured
gas from coke for local consumption.
2. An airport was located one kilometer southwest of Cheb gee No. 1 on
Enclosure A7. It vas approximately two kilometers square and had three
paved runways. The hangars, which had been damaged during World War II,
had not been repaired as of 1948. Two roads, one asphalt and one
gravelled, led_ to the airport from Cheb.
3. The highway to Karlovy Vary was paved with asphalt and was approximately
30 meters vide in Cheb and narrowed to 20 meters beyond. the city limits.
The highway to Brambach, Germany was also asphalted but was narrower
than the Karlovy Vary highway.
4. Numbers 6 and 7 on Enclosure A were formerly two large Catholic churches
which were converted into al-kw,- barracks in 1948.
