Brown coal deposits in the region o~' Lvov LLember of the Ukraine are not plentiful et all. As I have previously pointed out brown coal 25X1X is principally mined ixi the Rostotchia hills to the northwest of.Lvov. Using the following sketch I can better describe the area. The last glacier during the glacial age deposited tremendous amounts of rubble along the terminal moraine extending from the northeast of.Lvov to the southwest. These glacial deposits coupled with the abundant water.make mining operations, south of the terminal moraine, impractical and uneconomical. TTntil 1914!. no traces of brown coal had been discover- ed to the south of LVDV. Test drillings made in 1940 in the area to the northeast of Lvov to a depth of 200 to 220 meters, turned up some brown coal deposits. Again water seepage plus the poor quality of brown coal (heavily mixed with clay) made mining uneconomical. These same test drillings turned up carbon traces to the northeast, Traces of other types of coal than brown coal have been discovered in the,LVov region but they were very, very small. Since 1944 the Soviets may have started mining operations for not only brown coal but to mine the very small amounts of other types also. Their economy and huge man- power reserves are such that they would pay little attention to the cost. Rather, they would be seeking to reJieve the fuel shortage that exists in the area _,xcept for a poor grade of peat, brown coal is the only other fuel to be found. The area was long ago denuded of its forests. -end- JEGT & AMA +CE~ ~: 1.12/735.1 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/08/07 : CIA-RDP82-00047R000400330008-2
