1. The petroleum base of �Bolshoi Peshnoi Island is exceptionally important in
supplying petroleum products to Plant No 441 in Gurev.
2. Bolshoi Peshnoi Island is the sole transfer and transit point in the petroleum
shipping system "Baku-14-foot Sea Roadstead-Gurev,.Plant No 441".

3. Bolshoi Pesbnoi Island is five to six kilometers in length and one to two kilo-
meters in width. The island's soil consists of a mixture of sand with fine
cockle shell. Except for a strip of cane thickets around the shore, the island
is entirely without vegetation. The population is about 70-80 persons, mainly
employees of" the "Reydtanker" Shipping Company -and the Gurev Directorate of
Glavneftesbyt", and their families, Shipments of "gas oil" from Baku are
passed through Bolshoi Peshnoi Island. Tankers with gas oil from Baku arrive
at the 14-foot Sea Roadstead and are unloaded in large barges of the "Reydtanker"
Shipping Company. The barges with the gas oil are then towed from the 14-foot
Sea Roadstead to the Gurev Sea Roadstead where "Reydtanker" floating petroleum
pumping stations pump the gas oil from the large barges to barges of smaller
capacity (a00-1,000 capacity barges called "pauzok"). The smg11 barges are then
-tond to Bolshoi Peshnoi Island and brought into the hgrbor LSee No 11, Enclosure
(A.1/ where they are mored to dock No 1 or dock No 2 aee No 10 and #12 respec-
tively, Enclosure (Al/ and their contents unloaded into reservoirs, Usually
Pier No 1 is used; Pier No 2 is used only when traffic is heavy.
4. During the 1951 navigation season, about 300 thousand tons of gas oil were hauled
in the direction of Gurev. It was planned that in the future shipments would
reach 400 thousand tons in a season, and it is possible that at the present time
that figure has already been exceeded.
5. The small harbor on Bolshoi Peshnoi Island is equipped with two small wooden
moorings, about 50 meters each in length. V.pes about 250-300 mm ,Ln diameter
extend from the moorings to the pumphouse LSee No 7, Enclosure (Al/. If the ships
have their own pumping facilities, the petroleum products can be pumped directly

through the main Lsee No 13 Enclosure ( without using the pumphouse, but usually,
"Reydtanker" Shipping Company vessels do not have their own pumping facilities, the only
exception being the 800-ton capacity tanker "Cheleken" which does have punps. 50)0
5. The pumping section consists of four horizontal steam piston pumps (two in use and two
in reserve) with a capacity of 200 tons an hour, located in a one-,tory, white brick
building. The boiler room is located in a white, brick building Z,See No 5 Enclosure (A17
located about 100 meters from the pump house. The boiler room has two�return tubul
boilers which send steam to the pumps via the,pipe indicated by,No 6 anclosure (
A building containing a chemical laboratory ao 4 Enclosure (A)/ for investigating the
composition of incoming petroleum products is located between the boiler room and the
pump house.
W. Reservoirs at the base are of two types:
(a) 15 large reswoirs with a combined capacity of about 150 thousand tons, Zee No 3
Enclosure (A1/
(b) 14 small resevoirs with a combined capacity of about 30 thousand tons ES'ee No 15
Enclosure (Al/
All the reservoirs are of a dark color. There are no fences or enclosures anywhere
around the base.
8. A one-story wooden structure ,5ee No14 Enclosure (Ag is located on the beach near the
reservoirs and contains the offices of the "Reydtanker" Shipping Company (of the Gurev
Marine Agency) and the Gurev Directorate of "Glavneftesbyt". The se building contains �
the dispatcher and transshipment point of the base. The pipeline Pee No 1, Enclosure (Al/
leading to Plant No 441 is 400-450 mm in diameter and about 30 kilometers in length.
It lays on the surface on the island and in the water is placed on the bottom which
nowhere exceeds 0.5-0.8 meters in depth between Bolshoi Peshnoi Island and the mainland.
9. The island also has the following installations:
(a) The island light-house j'ee No 8 Enclosure (A).7 a wooden skeleton tower about 25
meters high. A mast with a yard for storm signals has been installed on the tower.
A One-story adobe house is located beside the tower.
(b) Light-house village 2Tio 9, Enclosure U417 consisting of eight one-story: adobe houses.

The island village go 20 Enclosure (A17 consisting of 20 small, one-family one-
story adobe houses.
(d) Estate gO 160 Enclosure (A. belonging to Sevostyanov, bead of the Bolshoi Peshnoi
Island transshipment point belonging to the "Reydtanker" Shipping Company). The
estate consists of a one-"story dwelling unit and two sheds, all of adobe.
