SSR In the regions of Dzhalal Abad and Tashkumir there are very small workings, principally for local needs. II. NEW SOURCES OF PETROLEUM DISCOVERED IN RECENT TIMES (A) Azerbaijan SSR It the region of Kirovobad there are now oil wells in operation (13) RSFSR 50X1 Saratov rayon Kuibyshev rayon Altogether in the regions of "the second Baku" during the World War II years and post-war years, more than 30 oil wells have been opened, and at present they are all in, industrial production. Besides this, new oil wells in the Makhachkala region have been discovered, and are also in industrial production. They are: Na lye Shiraki Mirzaani Besides this, there has been prospecting in the northern valleys of the Kury River in the region of Norio-Marktobi, and it is possible that there are some oil wells already in production in this area. (P) Kirgiz SSR At present, prospecting is being carried on, and part of the oil wells have already been put into operation in the regions: Dzhalal Abad Tashkumyr However, these wells are very small, and their production is used to fulfill the needs of the local industries. III. PETROLEUM PRODUCTION BY REGIONS 50X1 (A) Azerbaijan SSR Petroleum production in the Azerbaijan SSR and partly in the region of Baku has in recent times dropped considerably in comparison with what it was in the pre-World War II period. In the post-war years, and especially in the most recent years', the practice of drilling sea wells has spread widely. There have been many such wells drilled in the Artem Island area, and around the Islands of Zhiloy and Nargen. Besides this, in recent times the systet of inclined drilling has been put into practice with the purpose of taking oil out of areas underneath the city of Baku. In spite of all these attempts to raise petroleum production, in the year 1951 the Azerbaijan production did not reach the same level as it did before the war. This can be explained by the fact that there has been a very significant growth in the rate of petroleum output in "the second Baku." For example, in 1940 1,5 million tons of oil were produced, while in 1951, 9.6 million tons were produced. Petroleum production in the RSFSR is characterized by the following data: Years Production in Millions of Tons Planned Actual 7:1 1940 -- 7.0 195014.5 15.9 1951 19.0 19.8 1952 21.7 -- 1953 25.1 -- 195)4 28.2 -- 1955 33.0 -- The above table gives data on production in all regions of the RSFSR. The greatest concentration of petroleum refineries in Turkmen is in Krasnovodsk and Nebit Dage0 Oil production in Turkmen has increased mainly on account of the more intense exploitation of existing petroleum sources. Petroleum production in Turkmen SSR is as follows; Years Production in Millions of Tons Planned Actual 1940 -- 1.0 1950 1.104 1.3 1951 1.6 1.8 1952 1.9 1953 2.1 1954 2.6 1955 2.9 , (E) Uzbek SSR The petroleum industry of Uzbek SSR has increased due to the more intensive working of oil wells already in existence, especially in the regions of Neftebad and Fergana, and also on account of further dis- covery and opening of 'new wells in the region of Andizhana. It is necessary to note, however, that up until recently most of the petroleum production was used by local industry. Petroleum production in Uzbek SSR is characterized as follows: Years Production in Millions of Tons Planned Ac-ual 1940 -- 0.6 1950 1.066 1.2 1951 1.7 1.8 1952 1.9 1953 2.3 1954 2.9 1955 3.5 (F) Ukrainian SSR Petroleum production in the Ukrainian SSR has just barely begun to reach the pre-World War II level. The reason for this was that the old petroleum resources in the DrogobycheskO-Stanislavovsk region were destroyed during the war and were restored very slowly. In the region of Romny some of the wells are just beginning to produce and others have already begun industrial production. After the war intensive prospecting for new sources of petroleum was begun. The prospecting yielded some results but none so extensive as were expected earlier. It is true that there are some wells in production now, but their production is so small that it does not even suffice for local industrial needs. Petroleum production in Gruzinsk SSR is characterized by the following: Production iniMillions of Tons Years ftanned Actual 1940 -- -- 1950 0.110 0.2 1951 0.6 0.6 1952 0.8 1953 1.1 1954 1.5 1955 1.7 (H) Tadzhik SSR Up until World War II there was no petroleum industry in Tadzhik SSR. After the war, as a result of intense prospecting, a few small oil reserves were found and put into production. But the quantity of oil is so small in these reserves that it is all used for the needs of local industry. Work on the increase of resources has been strengthened lately and has allowed a marked increase in production.
