I was demobilized after World War II only because of the intercession of a friend of mine who had influe,10, once. Later I.was called up again as there was a great demand for AAA officers. Students with two years college or university are deferred from military service until sdhooling is finished although first year college students are called up for service. This, of course, is only my opinion, but I believe that the military planning of the USSR envisions not just enough officers for the present Soviet-army, but also hopes to produce enough to man an International Army in the future. 50X1 not observed any such training in the Soviet Zone of Germany. However, during World War II, women did Work in both defensive and offensive AAA and those who were technically qualified, were registered, on demobilization just as other military specialists and are sdbject to call up. Therefore, it is not impossible, that some of them may have been called up for service. I do know that large nuMbers of Soviet women were brought to the Soviet Zone of Germany but they were only used to replace German personnel as waitresses, typists and clerks. 50X1 About 100,000 although there are rumors that the nudber is greater. I would estimate that about 15% of the officers are on leave in the USSR at any one time. About 9,000 offAcers go on leave each month. All officers go on leave through transparent-on-order Zeig/ and Brest..LetoreskoiC, There are two trains daily for officers going on leave, One starts from Berlin the other from Frankfurt-on-Oder. About 75% of the officers going on leave will take their leave during the period o 3anuary7July, The remaining 25% take their leave during October-December. Officer replacements take place during the October -December period. About one-third of the officers are rotated each year. Troop replacements are not made on the two trains50X1 described above. About 250 - 300 officers pass through Fratkfurt-on-Oder daily. There was a big turnover in 1949 at which time about 50% of the personnel was trans- ferred.toOtherwise there are yearly changes in the fall, comprising about 20%. Replace- ments are on a Man-for-man and rank-for-rank basis except when an officer has just finished school, in which came the Gadre Section makes assignments where necessary. In other words, there were no restrictions on duties and ranks of those transferred. end Pt SECRET/SECURITY INFORMATION Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/05/28: CIA-RDP82-00047R000200310006-8
