The YAK-17 was started by an unusual procedure ffee Enclosure (Af. One
mat rolled up a cart of four standard oxygen flasks to within about 12
feet of the nose of the airplane. Each flask, about 60 inches long and
9 inches in diameter, was filled with air of about 150 atmospheres
pressure. the flasks contained compressed air because
the Hungarian color code is as follows red band, air; blue band,
oxygen; yellow 4rid, hydrogen; and white band, carbide. At this time
the pilot remairied seated in the plane while a man placed a plate in
the nose air intake and gave the plate a half turn to lock it in place.
He then opened the four valves simultaneously, at which time there were
sounds of .hiss* air and a whining turbine for 30 or 40 seconds. A
man then gave the plate a half turn and removed it from the nose of the
plane. The jet engine turbine continued to whine and the pilot then
taxied the airplane for a take-off.
