Other component units of the 1st Mecz Army are the 8th Tk Div, the 11th Tk
Div, the 4th AA Div, and the 4th Arty Brigade. The 9th Tk Div has an actual
strength of 79000 and a wartime T/0 of 99000. this contradicts information
in which he s ates that the 9th Tank Division
has a wartime strength of 129002(

30 The 23d Tank Regiment itself has two battalions of medium (T-34/85) tanks, and one
battglion of heavy (JS-3 with 122-mm gun) tanks. The combined tank strength of
the Regiment is 30r-34/85 tanks, and 9 JS-3 teaks. The tank personnel of the three
tank battalions are approximately 60 officers and 250 enlisted men. The tank
battalions, both medium and heavy, have a headquarters section consisting of a
Commanding officer, a deputy commander, a chief of staff, a technical officer, an
operations officer, and two or three enlisted men as clerks. There are three tank
companies. The medium tank battalion has a T/E of 18 T-34/85 tanks, 38 Nagant
or Tokarev pistols, 82 SMGs or carbines; it had a T/O of approximately 20 officers
and 100 enlisted men. The heavy tank battalion has a T/E of 9 JS-3 tanks, 25
Nagant or Tokarev pistOls, 48 SMGs or carbines; it had a T/O of 20 officers and
53 enlisted men.
4. Both the medium and heavy tank companies are composed of a headquarters, consisting
of a commanding officer, a political officer, platoon commanders, a 1st sergeant
and a company clerk. There are three platoons. A medium tank company has a T/t
of six T-34/85 tanks, 11 pistols, 26 SMGs or carbines. It has a T/O of five
officers and 32 enlisted men. The medium tank platoon contains two T-34/85
tanks. Each tank has a crew of five; the platoon commander may ride in either
of the two tanks. The driver has a Tokarev or Nagant pistol, and the other crew
members have carbines, or more often SMGs. A heavy tank company has a T/8 of
three JS-3 tanks, 10 Nagant or Tokarev pistols, 12 carbines or SMGs. It has a T/O
Of five officers and 17 enlisted men. The heavy tank platoon has one JS-3 tink
with a crew of six men as follows; a platoon commander, a driver (deputy commander),
a weapons commander, aweapons commander's assistant, a machine gunner, and a
radio man.
The 23d Tank Regiment also had a motorized Rifle Battalion. This battalion has_a
headquarters section and three motorized rifle Companies of approximately 350
officers and men Twenty 3-ton Studebaker trucks are used as personnel carriers.
The battalion was equipped with 82-mm and 120-mm mortars, and 45-mm and 57-mm AT
guns. The mortars and AT guns were towed behind the Studebaker trucks.
6. The Antiaircraft Machine Gun Company is equipped with 12.77-mm DShK and 762-mm
Goryunov machine guns. There are approximately 35 or 40 officers and mein.
7. The Headquarters Service Company is divided into three parts; (1) the administra-
tive platoon of about 20 men, including cooks, storekeepers, tailors shoe repair-
men, supply men, etc.; (2) the medigal platoon with about 20 officers and men; and
(3) the signal platoon with about 20 officers and men.
The Technical Supply Company has approximately 60 officers and men it had two
cOmmand tanks for the regimental commander and his chief of staff, and two tank
wreckers for disabled tanks.
