Source thumbed through this manual for about 10 minutes at the
classified documents section of the 83rd Heavy Machine Gun Battalion
at Pakiya (N 42-12, IC 27-03) seeking general information because he
wanted to Apply for and attend a course at the General Staff Academy
in Sofia. 6 Permission to read the manual had to be obtained from
the battalion's executive officer or battalion CO, and this manual
could not be removed from the classified document section at any
time.

This manual was published by the Ministry of National Defense in about
1952 and was printed by the Government Military Printing Office in
Sofia; it was classified as "top secret". The manual was a bound
edition with a dark green hard paper cover and measured about 10 x 14 cm;
it had about 300 paw. 'Souroe did not notice any statements or dates
in the contents which indicated that it had been translated from
Soviet manual.

The infantry manual was
published by the ministry of National Defense and was printed about
1950 by the Government Military Printing ,Office in Sofia.
Although the manual was classified "confidential", the company CO
could permit EM to read the manual when it was necessary. Officers
who wanted to read the manual had to sign for it at the classified
,documento section and could retain it for an indefinite period of
time, some editions liwere bound and others which
were stapled. the menus. as green, containing about
325 rough paper pages, and measuring about 8 x 12 cm.
The contents of this manual included explanations and diagrams of
offensive and defensive tactics from the individual soldier to company
level; scouting and patrolling and the use of messengers; recon-
naissance and combat patrols; offensive and defensive combat in wooded
areas, open areas, cities, and mountains; utilization of a platoon as
a point and rear guard; conduct of an ambush; the use of camouflage;
construction of trenches and fox holes.

Defense and was printed by the Government Military Printing Office
in Sofia about 1948. However, a later edition was published during
1950 and incorporated various changes in the 1948 version.
Copies of the manual were issued to all officers down to platoon level.
Additional copies were maintained in the company orderly room where
BM could borrow it if they desired. the manual as
unclassified; it had either green or cream-colored soft paper covers.,
contained about 250 rough paper pages, and measured about 8 x 12 cm.
a notation was printed on the inside cover which
stated that the regulations in the manual were based on those in
effect in the "Red Army" (Chervena Armia). 3
The contents of the manual dealt with dismounted drill from the
individual soldier to regimental level, parades and ceremonies, and
customs of the service including the giving of salutes.

The manual contained instructions for the performance of girribon
guard duty, the posting of sentries, the duties of NCOs and com-
missioned officers of the guard, instructions on walking posts,
various guard formations, relieving of guard sentries, and the

was published by the Ministry of National Defense and printed by the
Government Military Printing Office in Sofia about 1948. However, a
later edition was published during 1952.
The manual was unclassified, had either green or cream-colored aoft
paper covers, contained about 250 rough paper pages, and measured
about 8 x 12 cm in size, Copies were issued to all officers and
company orderly rooms and were available to EM. a
note on the inside cover stated that the contents were betted on
regulations in effect in the Red Army". The contents of the manual
included regulations on and explanations of the daily routine of
troops at the company level, daily training schedules, the preparation
and maintenance of morning reports and the sick book, the proper
arrangement of clothing and equipment for inspections, maintetande of
manuals and correspondence in the company orderly rooms, charge of
quarters duties, and general performance of duties while stationed in
a garrison.
f. Disciplinary Manual of the Bulgarian National Army (Disciplinaren Ustav
na Bulgarskata Marodna Armia)
It was published by the Ministry of National
Defense and printed about 1948 by the Government Military Printing
Office in Sofia. However, an edition printed as late as 1952.
This manual was unclassified, had either green or cream-colored covers,
contained about 60 rough paper pages, and measured about 8 x 12 cm.
It was issued to all officers and company orderly rooms and could be
loaned to individual soldiers.
The manual contained regulations governing the behavior of officers
and EM during their period of service, typea of offenses and punish-
ments,and various types of awards,;.- such as medals, money, and civi-
lian clothing, that might be awarded to outstanding soldiers.

Both parts of thig manual had green Soft Paper covers, the-allured about
IOAlt 15 cm, and were claistfted restricted'. Each company had
several copies of both parts and norMally,the contents were read
to a group of soldiers during instructional Periods.
Part 1 contained about 125 pages and its contents included instructions
on methods of computing windage and elevation for small arms, explana-
tions on trajectories, the correct alignment of sights, and sighting-
in procedures. Firing principles given in it were considered to be
applicable to all small arms. One section also contained instructions
on firing the 82 mm mortar (model and time unknown)

Part 2 contained instructions on correct offensive and defensive
infantry-type small arms firing positions in the field and on marks-
manshiR firing on the range. According to instructions in the manual,
recOrt:fire pract14,on the range (in the prone position at all ranges)
consisted of firing two sighting rounds and four rounds for record at
a silhouette target (head and shoulders), at 100 m, two sighting
rounds and four rounds for record at a silhouette target (bead and body,
E kneeling type) at 200 in, and two sighting rounds and four rounds for
record at a-full-size silhouette target at 400 m. Sandbag rests could
be utilized when record fire practice was considered to be defensive,
rather than offensivesat which time sandbag rests were not permitted.
Tripod-mounted machine gun record slow-fire practice was Conducted on
rectangular-type targets measuring about 80 cm in length and 4-cm-high
on which were printed 20 4-,cm black squares. The gunner was alloted
20 rounds and was supposed to hit each of the 20 4-cm black squares. 50X1

Comment: all manuals cur-
rently used in tne Bulgarian Army-A?translations of Soviet
Army manuals. However, it is illogical to assume that those
manuals which are instructions on German weapons of World War II
vintage came from the Soviet Army.
