OF PAGES 3 DATE OF INFORMATION REFERENCES: 50X1 PLACE ACQUIRED 50X1 THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION SOURCE 1. .An unidentified Soviet Army caserne was located on East German ' Highway No 87, one kilometer southwest of Leipzig/Schoenau (N 51-19, E 12-17). ] autobus and bicycle. During approximately seven years or travel along the road which bordered the former anti-aircraft (Flak) caserne, he was able to observe wily small military training formations within the caserne area or directly across the road in a training field. ? larger than what he assumud to be company strengtn. rine greatest number of soldiers observed at one time was estimated to be 800 to 900. They were armed with rifles or machine pistols and appeared to be going through some sort of training cycle. The officers' shoulder boards had a gold background with red stripes and piping. 3. The estimated capacity of the caserne was 1,500 personnel. When he passed, source paid little attention to the activities within the caserne because he was more interested in the activities that usually took place on the training field. He believed that approximately 30 female Soviet Army personnel were also stationed at the caserne. The caserne itself consisted of three large three-story reinforced concrete apartment-type houses, 9 x 40x 15 in, one guard shack, 4 x 4 x 4 in, and one two-story stucco house, 8 x 12 x 1 m, 44111ah source assumed was the living quarters of one of the caserne officers. The entire caserne covered an area of approximately 250 x 200 in and was fenced . only on three sides; the side of the caserne on the main road was not fenced. The eastern and northern boundaries of the caserne were fenced by 1.80 m wooden slats while the western boundary had a 2.20 in wire mesh fence. The only guards observed were posted at the caserne entrances on the main road. These guards controlled v :GO 0: Zde pedestrian traffic at the two 50X1 gates. caserne was built between 1936 and 1938-and-that it was a permanent-type installation with central heating and paved roads between the houses. Althoueh the caserne garage was located directly on the main road, identify unit transportation other than small trucks, sedans,and jeeps. (See page 3 for a sketch of the caserne area.) 5. Directly across the main road in front of the caserne, in an. area ,known as the "Kirsohberg", source observed Soviet soldiers taking training in a rectangular area, approximating 200 x 300 in. Inside of this area, he observed trenches, sandbag-reinforced constructions, foundations for AA positions, and other unrecognized obstacles which he believed were used in infantry or AA training. Several times, crews pulling, setting up, and n r ery piece which he identified as a 76 mm division gun, M1942. 50X1 50X1 50X1 6. During the demonstrations observed approximately fifty T-34/85 tanks parked inside of the training area. Although he had no knowledge of where these tanks came from,he believed that the Soviets had a tank unit stationed within the vicinity because the tanks appeared very suddenly, drove into Leipzig, and then parked in the training area until about 25 June 1953.
