Zhivovtsi (N 43-24, E 23-08),whioh had a population of between 1,000
and 1,500 persons. It was an agricultural community and had no Indus-
trial enterprises. It was not damaged during World War TT Th

150 Trudovak- ,soldiers who were billeted in. requisitioned buildings.
These Trudovaks first arrived there in February Land

been sent to Zhivovtai to eompleje fortifications along the Yugoslav
border, 40 km east of Zhivovtai. The entire Trudovak company in
Zhivovtsi had only 30 to 40 rifles,,.'World War I models, and two or
three Sohmeisers for the guards at the company headquarters. The
company had no other armament, There. was no new construction activi-
ty, during 1953, and the Bulgarian military had 25X1
no reason, at that time, to undertake any at Zhivovtsi.,- In summer

6. Headquarters of Trudovak Labor Company . The staff consis- 25X1
ted of three or four officers and some Schmeiser-armed Trudovak
guards who guarded the entrance of this building; the building was
stuccoed and single storied.

police administration,

10. A former tavern, 10 x 10 x 7 m, stuccoed, which housed 20 Trudovak
soldiers.
.11. A single-storied storage building, stuccoed, and in poor condition.
Shoes, uniforms, and tools for Trudovak soldiers were stored here.
12. An Orthodox church which was attended by the population on Sundays.
Trudovaks were afraid to be seen in this church and did not attend.
13. A messhall, 12 x 3 x 3 m, which was stuccoed; 4O Trudovak soldiers

14. An elementary school, 12 x 5 x 5 m, single-storied, and stuccoed, which
was attended by the village children.
15. A former tavern, 5 x 6 x 6 m, stuccoed with two stories; 15 Trudovaks
were quartered in this building.

General Information
The village streets of Zhivovtsi were not illuminated at night# although
all homes had electricity. Water was obtained from street wells. Trudo-
vaks were forbidden to buy food from the population or to associate with
them. They were permitted to be in the village streets only on Sundays
until 2000 hours And were restricted to their quarters on weekdays.
