Ye. zhul~ovskiy and a group of his associates. This group had been active since 1917 when they were known as the Aviation Computing-Experimental bureau of the Main Administration of the Air Fleet. tine of the first tasks of TAI was the study of the forces of the air and water and their uti.i.ization Lox' the national economy. In addition, TBAQI also carried out research on the forces of wind. In the vicinity of Dalaklava the institute built a large wind-powered maohine (30 meter diameter of blades). This type of reoearoh was o'nduoted under the auspices of the Division of wind Machines which in 1931 was separated from TsAGI and formed the Central Wind-Power Engineering Institute (TsVEI). At one time TsAGI also had a Hydraulicenivision which oondact?d research on tdraulia oonstruotions ar hydro-oleotric stations. Since 1931 thdie Division has been identified a he independent Hydro~Maohine ^LIw oI* WENT LAL Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/05/18 : CIA-RDP82-00039R000100120019-8 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/05/18 : CIA-RDP82-00039R000100120019-8 COFiOEN TI At Buildin Inetitute 1 At one time T AGI oleo conducted reeearoh on airplane amt in the Propeller-.ngine Division which ainoe 1930 I* become en independent agency Oentra1 Inetitute of a Building (TsZAM~. In this manner not only was TSAGI developed but at the same time it gave rise to four new institutes. At the present time TaAOI conducts research to determine the prob- lems of aeroplane construction, etudiee of ?light and operating ehara- oterlstioe, various theoretical experimental problems and utilisation of the results obtained by studies for improving the oharaoteristioa of planes in general. Theoretical questions in the field of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics and the general theory of rigidity are conducted by a group of scientists and research speeialiats headed by Academician . A. Chaplygin. The Aerodynamic Laboratory, TsAGI is equipped with all manner of equipment which permits the study of model n high-velocity air flow. TsAGI hgs also conducted studies on the various lifting problems of airfoils and utilizing such theories as those expressed by Zhukovskiy and Praddtl' and others developed the best shape for aircraft wings. It must be kept in mind that the wing of an aircraft does not act as an independent agent but rather ag a part within the whole canpiex making up the body of a plane. Special attention is given to essential parts of the plane which s?rve no lifting :unction but which neverthe- less contribute to the aerodynamics of the fuselage. -5. The Laboratory on Dynamic Testing, T eAGI conducts re searoh to determine the effect of ehoolc forces and variable foroea on materials to be used in the airplane construction field. The Division of Aviation Construction is working in close coopera- tion with the Experimental Aerodynamics Division on studies on the force d.agrame of airplane parts under load. The General Theory Group in addition to studying problems of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics is also stuc ring problems of the rigidity and resistance of materials. It might also be mentioned that all of the divisions of TeAGI work in close cooperation with the Division for Testing Plane Performance under Actual Flight Conditions. -6- CONFIDENTIAi Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/05/18: CIA-RDP82-00039R000100120019-8 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/05/18 : CIA-RDP82-00039R000100120019-8 CONFIDENTIAL In ito work TIAol ie oloae]q related to the Inetituto of Mathematios and Maohanioe of tie Mo$oow gtate Univerei1, various aerodynnioe 1abora- torie Kharkov and 19oeoaw, and with variou victual eoientiste in Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov and Kaean?
