SUBJECT: Telephone Conversation with William G. Miller, Staff
Director, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
l.1 I called Bill Miller regarding the Jack Anderson
column on e eragusa matter. I told him that Herb Hetu, Public
Affairs Office, would be talking with Anderson this morning to
straighten him out on this matter and he planned to tell Anderson that
the Agency had looked into this matter and submitted reports to the
Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on it. Mr. Miller had no
problem with this and confirmed that our inquiry had been made at
the request of the Committee. He also mentioned in passing that the
Committee had independently looked into the matter and while there
was still one more individual to be contacted, they had found Seragusa
very "tentative. "
I also talked with Mr. Miller about my plans to accompany
Ambassador Frank Carlucci on courtesy calls on members of the Select
Committee on a priority basis and it was agreed. that as a first step the
Ambassador and I would meet with Miller (and possibly Stan Taylor, of
the Committee staff) at 1:30 p. m. next Monday.
3. I queried Miller about the suggestion made by Chairman
Daniel K. nouye (D., Hawaii) when he last met with the Director regarding
a statement at his (Director's) first appearance before the Committee
this year on the situation with respect to intelligence organizations and
prospects for the coming year. Miller said he would suggest that the
Director have a brief statement which could be made at the beginning of
his budget presentation or other appearance, whichever came first,
which would cover the "state of intelligence" rather than the state of the world
from and intelligence point of view. This information was passed on to
IC Staff whsa will pr re 20-minute statement
or the zrec or s use. 25X1
