*On 11 October 1977, the Intelligence Directorate and the National
Intelligence Officers were combined as the National Foreign Assessment
Center (NFAC). Robert R. Bowie was appointed Director of the National
Foreign Assessment Center. He also retained the title of Deputy to
the Director of Central Intelligence for National Intelligence (see
below). This latter title was recently changed to Deputy Director for
National Foreign Assessment.

The Office (and Board) of National Estimates was one of the offices
put under the DDI when it was established in January 1952. ONE was
transferred from the DDI to the DCI area on 20 January 1966. The organ-
izational structure of ONE remained the same until 1 October 1973. On
that date, the Board and Office of National Estimates was replaced by
the National Intelligence Officers (NIOs), each to be the Director's
personal representative and reporting directly to him on the NIO's area
of responsibility. A Deputy to the Director of Central Intelligence for
National Intelligence Officers (D/DCI/NIO) was assigned administrative
and coordinating authority over the NIOs.
