23. LIAISON Called Susan Pitts, in the
office of Senator Alan Cranston (D. , Calif.), and advised her that due to
the security level of the material to be discussed at the luncheon tomorrow,
Mr. Allyn Kreps, Legislative Aide to the Senator, would not be able to
attend because he lacks clearances. She said she previously worked on
the Church Committee and had compartmented clearances. She said
the Senator had talked to the Director and had been advised that those
clearances could be reinstated if needed. She suggested that we
reinstate her clearances and she would attend. I told her I would check on
this but we do have a rule about personal staffers. She said she under-
stood but felt that the conversation between the Senator and the Director
would take care of this.
Later in the day, after checking with
O/DCI, I called Ms. Pitts back an advised er Una we wou
'not e able to reinstate her clearances, that since she is a personal
staffer she would not be eligible for the clearances and therefore could
not attend the luncheon if they wanted the discussions to be meaningful.
She said she understood completely and that Larry Smith, Senate
Armed Services Committee staff, could handle the staff work involved.
She seemed very pleasant about the whole matter.

this and in fact, he said they would send it from there. I thanked him
