Request from House Permanent Select Committee an
Intelligence
1. Mr. Loch Johnson, a staff member of the House Permanent
Select Committee on Intelligence, visited NPIC on Monday, 27 November
1978. During the visit he requested that we provide him satellite
imagery and a schematic drawing of a photint satellite for use by
Representative Aspin. According to Mr. Johnson, Congressman Aspin
is writing an article pn SALT verification for Scientific American
and would like to use such imagery as part of the article.
2. I indicated to h1r. Johnson that no satellite imagery had been
released and there was little likelihood that any would be in the short
time frame under consideration. Further, although there have been
numerous satellite collection vehicle illustrations in aerospace jour-
nals, to the best of my knowledge none has been officially released.
I indicated that same U-2 photography has been released to the press
(principally that of the Cuban missile crisis) and that an unclassi-
fied aerial photo of the Soviet D class SSBN has been released. I
indicated that we probably had copies of these.
3. It is my understanding that subsequently Mr. Johnson re-
iterated his request for applicable photographs to a representative
of the Office of Public Affairs.
?4. Attached are seven unclassified SRLT related photographs
which may be released to Mr. Johnson for Representative Aspin. As
noted above, they are not satellite photographs. This fact should be

made clear upon their release to avoid any confusion ar embarrass-
ment. As you will recall during Mr. Johnson's visit, he gave the
impression that he thought the release of some old outdated satellite
photography was not much of a problem. Therefore, I believe it wise
that we make it clear to him that we are doing our best to be re-
sponsive to the request, but that tire are not in a position to be
fully responsive to the request as originally stated.
