SUBJECT: Request From the Office of Senator Richard S. Schweiker
(R., Pa.) - MKULTRA Related Matter
1. II On 2 October 1978, I received a telephone call from Charlie
Powers, of Senator Schweiker's office, who was inquiring about an MKULTRA.
related matter. Mr. Powers wanted to ascertain if CIA had at any time
made public the fact that the Pedlow Nease Company located in Lockhaven,
Pennsylvania was one of the institutions involved in MKULTRA. After
checking wit OTS; OGC; and
advised r. Powers that we had released the Pedlow
I Iname under the FOIA in an MKULTRA context (see
2. (C) Mr. Powers called me on 10 October and wanted to know
whether we had ever made public the fact thatl was a
witting participant in the MKULTRA project. Again, after checking with
the aforementioned persons, I assured Mr. Powers that CIA had not
made this fact public. (NOTE: During our discussions, Mr. Powers
indicated that his interest in this matter revolved around an allegation
that appeared recently in an unnamed magazine that the drug yohimbine
is in fact an aphrodisiac. A query to I resulted in the
attached memorandum under Tab B.)

ATTENTION

Senator Sweiker/MKULTRA
1. Per your telephoned request of 3 October 1978,
attached are two documents copied from MKULTRA Sub-
Project #20, dated 27 November 1953 and 18 November 1953.
These documents relate to a contractual arrangement for
the production of the "di-Mannich of yohimbine" from two
pounds of yohimbine hydrochloride. Please note that in
their present unsanitized form, these documents are con-
sidered classified.
2. There is nothing in the file to indicate the rea-
son for making this compound nor for the interest in
yohimbine. As a result of this request, two references
were checked:
A. Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products,
Gosselin, Hodge, Smith and Gleason; 4th Edition, 1976:
"Once reputed to be an aphrodisiac, but it has no
proved therapeutic uses."
B. Physician's Desk Reference; 31st Edition, 1977:
"Andro Medicone (Reg. T.M.) tablets containing yoham-
bine hydrochloride; Indicated for sexual feebleness
of psychogenic origin."
It seems likely that at the time this work was performed
the product was believed to be an aphrodisiac.
