1. I have drawn a sketch of the'Dzerzhinek industrial area on 50X1-HUM
which I have located the following points; Lice page 5 2
a. Populated Areas, CheMical Plants. and Other Points of Interest
Point 1 City of Tzerzhinsk
,
Center of the industrial area. The population of
Dzerzhinek and surrounding areas was estimated in 1951 to
have reached, the figure of 150.000. The majority
of the Industrial plants' employees and workers
reside in Dzerzhinek and the surrounding city
workers' settlements. The city's Gorkom executive
committee is headed by an industrial engineer
(chemist) who serves as the committee's chairman
(Oberbuergermeister) for the municipality and the
plants of this area. In the USSR it is customary to
appoint in industrial cities or areas engineers or
other qualified specialists as heads of municipal 50X1-HUM
executive, committees, who guide not only the urban
communities but primarily represent and protect the
interests of the growing Soviet industries. j

Point 2, Zavod Imeni SVerdlova (Chemical Plant)
' This plant and i.large workers, settlement are
located about li - 2 kilometers northwest of '
Dzerzhinsk. No German specialists were known,iO,
have !worked there. The zavod's number and typeqd
production le unknown to me. .The workers' settle-
ment with about 2000 residents, as well as the. plant ?
itself, ,belong to the Dzerzhinsk mbsesicipa4system.

the vicinity of the plant. Many of the workers live,
under poor and primitive conditions in the settle,-
ment's old and dilapidated wooden dwellings. :The .
Sverdlova plant can be reached from Dzerzhinsk by'-

streetcar and commuter trains.. The latter run from
the kailibad stAtion indicated on my'sketch'by.the

This plant' is located about 1 - kilometers emit
_ ofpzershtnnk.. No German specialists worked-there.
This plea was knoin to Supply all'iSihereiRsialla-
tionb.in'the'Dtershinsk Area with hydrogen. It was
also rumored that the plant was producing nitrogen.
A permanent female forced labor camp is located
near this plant.
Point 4. Zavodlio. 96 z 7
Point 5 laxeSpi_CA ? (Chemical Plant)
This plant is located approximately 3 - 4 kilo-
meters east of Dzerzhinek. A steam and power
plant is located in the vicinity of this plant.
The ASINGER group, transferred from Moscow to.
.Dzerzhinsk in 1948, worked at this plant. /
,Point .6Zavod Rulon (Chemical Plant)
This is one of the largest plants in the Dzerzhinsk
area. It is located about 6 - 7 kilometers east of
Dzerzhinsk proper. No German specialists worked
there. Type of. production unknown. The streetcar'
line servicing all the plantis and settlements'
located along its route terminates at this point.
The workers' settlement in this area connate of
four-story high housing blocks.
Point 7 Petroleum Refinery

This refinery belongs to the plant OKA. Many tower-
like vertical tanks could be observed in this area.

Point 9 Lake Svyataye
? Lake and old village located on the road to
? Zholnino (point 10).
Point '10 Vipage Zholnino
Former land-owner's estate, now a Soviet kolkhoz.
A tyPiaal old Soviet locality; presents .a very
poor and neglected appearance.
Point 11 Chernorekhenskiye Dvoriki .
This ;tillage is located along the Moscow Gorkiy
highway. I have no information on this locality.
Point 12 Dudenavo
This large village is inhabited by many fishermen
who supply the Dzerzhinsk markets with their
catch. This village is surrounded by well-tended
? fields and vegetation and.presepts a clean and
tidy appearance. River boats from Dzerzhinsk
connect this locality *ith the north bank of the
Oka River,. Many masts with electric power lines
could be observed running south orthinvillage.
? It, was. rumored that in 1950 a new 'airfield was
established at a point, south of Dudenovo. Soviet
air force soldiers were. frequentlyobserved traveling
from Dzerzhinsk to this yillage.
Point 13 River Harbor 2:1
A calcareous pit (deposits) is located in this
area. This harbor'serves as an important trans-
? .portation hub for the industrial installations of
the Dzerzhinsk area,
Point lA Road to the Sverdlo4a Plant
This road is an extension of the Koltsovo Prospekt
2r.1 7. The Soviet
intelligentsia and Stakhanovite workers are known
to reside in the' one-family houses'flanking this
road.. This road is Tartly paved and in poor :- r
condition. : ?
Point 15. Road' to Gorkiy if 50X1
Point 16 Main Highway, Moscow-Dzerzhinsk-Gorkiy
This highway is in good condition, suitable for
light, and heavy -traffic. It belongs to the system
of the Soviet main road arteries.

Point 17 Pipeline
This is an extensive system of pipelines servicing
the plants of this area. Many pipes, 1 meter in
diameter, were observed on stone supports, fr..l meter
above the ground..

Point 18 Workers' Settlement Igumnovo
Many of the Zavod 96 facilities are located in this

Point 19 Zavod Yava (Chemical Plant)
This small plant is located in the vicinity of the
plant Rulon. No Germans were known to have worked
there. Type of production is unknown to me.

Periodic movement of air force personnel, officer
and enlisted, was observed in this direction. No
other concrete information.

2. The only other plant known to me to be located in this area is the
automotive plant, Avtomobilniy Zavod Imeni Molotova. This plant is
located in the vicinity of Gorkiy. Zim and possibly the Pobeda
autos are being manufactured at this plant. German PWs were known
to have worked there until 1949. To my knowledge, no German
civilian specialists were employed at this installation. I have no
other information of plants in the Gorkiy area.
