the expansion of the apprentice school was a manifes-
tation of the Communist plan to train the youth in every, possi-
ble way technically as well aerpelitioally.The young men and women'
were givenall sorts of promises as to what they might achieve
by pursuing technical and scientific studies. While participating
in the training program, they were at the same time being indoctri-
nated with Communism.

The original Zeiss prewar course was three years. The Communists
reduced this to two years after the war, but apprentices were so
poorly trained that it was again rrestored to three years in 1952.

not a new building. During the warxit suffered serious bomb
damage. However, sections of the walls wpre left intact, and it
was being reconstructed according to its former plans. This build-
ing was 100 it 25 meters, of steel-reinforced oonorete, and three
stories high--the top story was double-height. During the war
periscopes were tested and adjusted in this upper section.
Judging by the rate of construction
the building has now been completed and partially equipped.
