meters high. Children's playground, restaurant, summer
movie theater.
Point 3 Textile Department Store
10-20 x 10-20 x 8-10 meters. Gray brick building with a
flat roof. During the last year or so (1950-51) textiles
(partly imported from Czechoslovakia), carpets and furs
were available here on the free or unrationed market.

Point 10 Vegetable Store
8-10 x 8-10 x 5-6 meters. Gray brick construction with a
flat roof. Vegetables, potatoes, meat ,vodka, wine were
sold here.

construction with a flat roof. Dishes, glassware,
Soviet cameras (copies of the German Rolleiflex),
bicycles, ready-made suits and dresses for men and
women were sold here.
Point ha Department Store
8-10 x 8-10 x 5-6 meters. Gray brick construction with a
flat roof. At first specialized in baby articles; later,
general department store goods.
Point 12 Bookstore and Gastronom
30-40 x 15-20 x 10-15 meters. Gray brick construction
with a flat roof. Bookstore sold books in Russian and a
few German books plus sheet music. The Gastronom sold
department store articles, vodka, wine, chocolate, sweets.
Point 13 Stocking Factory
40 x 40 x 10-12 meters. Gray concrete construction with a
flat roof. Employed about 50 - 100 female workers.
Produced simple socks and stockings for men and women.
Other details unknown.
Point 14 Store IV
20-30 x 20-30 x 8-10 meters. Grayish-yellow brick
construction with a flat roof. Sold same goods as
Gastronom (see Point 12 above).
Point 15 School for Artisans (Handwerkerschule)
40-30 x 30 x 30-40 meters. Gray brick construction with a
flat roof. Training of apprentices (artisans) and music
students. Capacity of about 150-200 students.
Point 16 Technical College
40-50 x 30 x 30-40 meters. Gray, probably concrete,
construction with a flat roof. Allegedly technical
college for chemistry and engineering students. .

hourspand another going in the direction of Lissichansk
came through about 1600 hours. Also, at least one passen-
ger train came through Rubezhnaya in the morning and one
in the afternoon

flat roof. The children of German scientists and Soviet
officials and technicians were taught here. The language
spoken in the school was Russian while the language
taught was Ukrainian. About 400 students in attendance.

30 x 30 x 15-20 meters. Concrete or brick construction
with a flat roof. A seven year, popular school; as a
whole, the 'teachers were less qualified than in Point -20
above. The language spoken in the school was Ukrainian
while the language taught was Russian. There were about
300-400 students.
Apartment Building .
80-100 x 40-x 40 meters. Yellowish brick,construction
with a flat roof. Completed in 1951 but apdttments not
yet occupied.
Former Prisoner of War Camp
80-100 x 40 x 40 meters. Yellowish brick construction.
with a flat roof. After the prisoners were evacuated ?
is 1950, the,building was used as an apartment building.
Number of the camp is not known.
Point 23 i Bungalows
Point 23i
10-15 x 10-15 x 8 meters. Groups 'of seven to ten; brown
brick constructions with flat gabled roofs,, each having
three rooms and kitchen. Intended for use by the German
Scientists, they were taken over in 1949 by directors'
and officials of the Khimkombinat.

Point 33, Wooden Bridge Across Swamps
About 1000 meters long and three to four meters wide,
resting on wooden pilings spaced about ten meters apart
and about three to five meters above the swamp: On either
Bide of the bridge were wooden handrails about 60-70canti-
meters high. The bridge Was for. pedestrian use only arid
in verydbad condition because many of the boards had.been
stolen by the local inhabitants for firewood. Very danger-
ous to use at night,.

Point 34 Pontoon Bridge Across the Donetz River
About 50 meters long and three to four meters wide. A
temporary bridge for cars, trucks and horse-drawn vehicles,
taking the place of a permanent construction blown up dur-
ing the wara concrete pillars of which could still be seen.

Of varying widths as it flowed past Rubezhnaya, the average
width at normal water level was between 40 and 80 meters. 50X1-HUM
It is frozen over from the beginning of December to the
middle of February and floods the surrounding area in spring.
The banks vary from sandy, rocky :to swampy and flat to ?
steep.

surface in poor condition. Heavy traffic as well as horse-
drawn vehicles. Cargo, origins or destinations unknown.

This road connects with Point 40 above, about five to six
meters wide, asphalt surface, partly in poor condition.

5. In order to gain entrance to the plant and laboratory building
had to show the gate guards a pass or propusk; the pass issued
was of plain brown calico, the outside of which was blank, _The
inside contained the data illustrated on the rough sketch
which is approximately to scale See page 13_7. There were two or
three rubber stamps on the right lower half of the pass to indicate
the gate permitted to USE

6. Our working papers were looked up by a Soviet woman laboratori.
worker in sharge of security at the end of each day in an old,'
worn metal cabinet fitted with 'a padlock. They could be taken out
of the plant after obtaining written permission from the director
of N1OPIK. However, members of our group often took their papers
home whenever they felt like doing so and nobody was ever caught.
The papers themselves bore no manner of classification but were
Identified by the signature of the individual submitting the paper.

S. Each of the six gates of the plant was tended by a gateman (or woman)
armed with -a pistol and a civilian guard (man or woman) armed with a
rifle. Some of the civilian guards wore Communist Party jackets,
part of the official CP uniform, or sometime red arth bands. In.

woman patrolling the plant area at one time. The gate men, or women
were usually middle aged while the civilian guards were between 17
and 30 year of age.
