4. The DTR asked whether there was any OTR interest
in the Control Data PLATO system or whether it should be
dropped. The Chief, LLC, noted that he had just received a
call from the Control Data representative inquiring about
interest. He stated that PLATO is not ready for LLC yet.
Chief, FTD, stated that the system could be interesting for
course-building, but it would be much better on our own
computers, rather than using their remote system. The EA/TR
cited cost figures for the system, rental and purchase. The
DTR asked whether the group should discuss putting PLATO
programs on our computers. The Chief, FTD, replied in the
negative. The DDTR suggested that OTR people, especially
LLC personnel, might want to go to the Control Data
Arlington Education Center, and rent me to work with the
system. Chief, LLC, suggested that might be STATINTL
interested. The Acting Chief, CID, at he and his
officers have, for some time, been convinced that it would
be feasible to put some of their training programs on
computers. The DTR asked Chief, FTD, to ha his
people get together with CID personnel and to STATINTL
determine whether the PLATO English program t into
the PDP 11/45. The Secretary was tasked with contacting the
Control Data representative with reference to her call to
Chief, LLC, and report that we are looking into possible
uses of the system.
5. The Unit Chiefs presented their reactions to the
Project OUTREACH displays in ITG. All were agreed that the
"Energy" exhibit needs a narration. In response to a question
from Chief, II, the DTR outlined the various exhibits which
were being prepared and, in general, their sequence. Most
members agreed that the displays were visually attractive,
although several members commented that the artwork was not
very professional in quality. Several members also pointed
out that the displays should be placed against the inner
wall of the first floor corridor, in order to avoid blocking
the visitors' view of the courtyard and to eliminate the
potential problem of glare from the windows interfering with
the displays.
6. The DTR asked whether there were any
personnel problems outstanding. She replied in the negative.
The DTR stated that an OTR Instruction on Fitness Reports
would be forthcoming. He noted a tendency for the Units to
get away from finished staff work. He recognized that in
some cases pen ing ecisions requiring drafts to be sub-
mitted, but requested that, whenever possible, papers be
submitted to him in final form.
