Captareik Japanese Nblishink Authoritisa 1* Libiz As is well known, the South Manchurian Amilimyema more than just a transportation ?company; it was one of the major weapons in Japan'a. expansionist program and a vital force in her domination af Manchuria and North CU., The library contained about 100,000 volumes and some 500 periodical films; in the main, standard reference works on all parts of East Asia. Seas 30,000 of the books were in English and other European languages and only a small proportion of these were sent to Washington. The washington Document Center received approximately 60,000 its in the Japanome languagit and accessioned those of intelligence value. A large percentage dealt with the Far Eastern USSR (see dpecial Accession Lists) on industrial, agricultural, commercial and political subjeots. The East Asia Research Institute Thin institute was an organisation set up by the Japanese Govern.. sent to carry out research and act in an advisory capacity on all kinds of Asiatic probless. It prepared studies and ccmpilations on natural resources, population dietribution, acricultural processes and similar subjects. A large staff of axperta in asiatic languages, anthropology, geology, etc. was employed in the inetitute and they accumulated a copious library, similar in content to that of the South Manchurian aailwuy but of a more technical nature. SEC receired some 30,000 items in this category and acceasionsd thoae of intslligence value (see technical and economic accessions lists). 3.Mitsubishi Research Library Approximately 50,000 volumes oaprised this library, one of the best libraries existing on Asiatic economics, trade, finance', indastry, etc. The major portion of this library was held in Japan for use by the Roonomic and Scientific Section, SCAP. ibllowing publishing authorities m th made up e bulk of SDC receipts (acme ehl,000 item), mainly military (CINCPAC, CINCP0A?
