DAVID ROCKEFELLER
(Biographical Summary)
David Rockefeller became chairman of the Board of
Directors and chief executive officer of The Chase Manhattan
Bank, N.A. in New York on March 1, 1969 and of The Chase
Manhattan Corporation upon its formation on June 4, 1.969.
During his career with Chase Manhattan, M3:. Rockefeller
has gained a worldwide reputation as a leading banker and
spokesman for the business community. He has spearheaded
the Bank's expansion both internationally and throughout the
metropolitan New York area and has helped the Bank play a
significant role as a corporate citizen. in addition,.he
has been a leader in many public and private projects,
reflecting his wide-ranging interests in international,
governmental, civic and cultural affairs. lie has received
high honors from nearly a dozen nations.
Mr. Rockefeller joined the Chase National Bank as an
assistant manager in the foreign department in 1946. lie was
appointed an assistant cashier in 1947, second vice president
in 1948 and vice president in 1949.
From 1950 to 1952, he was responsible for the supervision
of Chase's business in Latin America where, under his direction,
new branches were opened in Cuba, Panama and Puerto Rico,
plus a representative office in Buenos Aires.

He was named a senior vice president in 1952 with
responsibility for supervising the economic research department
and customer relations in the metropolitan New York area,
including all the New York City branches.
When Chase National and the Bank of Manhattan Company
merged on March 31, 1955, Mr. Rockefeller was appointed an
executive vice president in charge of the bank development
department. On January 1, 1957, he became vice chairman of
the Board of Directors with responsibility for the administrative
and planning functions of the bank as a whole. He became
president of the bank and chairman of the executive committee
of the Board of Directors on January 1, 1961.
Born June 12, 1915 in New York City, Mr. Rockefeller is
the youngest son of the late John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. He attended Lincoln School'of
Columbia University's Teachers College in New York for 12
years, graduated from Harvard in 1936 with a bachelor of
science degree, and, after post-graduate study at Harvard
and the London School of Economics, he received a Ph.D.
degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1940.
His doctoral thesis, "Unused Resources and Economic Waste,"
was published by the University of Chicago Press.
Mr. Rockefeller has been awarded honorary doctor of law
degrees by Columbia University (1954), Bowdoin College
(1958), Jewish Theological Seminary (1958), Williams College

Pace College (1970), St. John's University (1971) and Middlebury
College (1974). Mr. Rockefeller also was awarded honorary
doctor of engineering degrees from Colorado School of Mines
(1974) and Polytechnic Institute of New York (1977).
Mr. Rockefeller was secretary to the late Mayor Fiorello
H. LaGuardia of New York from 1940 to 1941 and assistant
regional director of the United States Office of Defense,
Health and Welfare Service from 1941 to 1942.
He enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in May 1.942,
entered Officer Candidate School in 1943 and was discharged
as a captain in 1945. He served in North Africa and France,
where for seven months he was an assistant military attache
in Paris. Mr. Rockefeller was awarded the U.S. Legion of
Merit, the U.S. Army Commendation Ribbon and the French
Legion of Honor.
Mr. Rockefeller was chairman of the Board of Trustees
of The Rockefeller University from 1950 to 1975 and is
currently chairman of the executive committee. He is vice
chairman and a trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. He
participates with his brothers in a number of philanthropic,
economic development and investment enterprises.
Mr. Rockefeller helped found and served as chairman of
the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association (D-LMA), whose
planning proposals have aided the redevelopment of lower
Manhattan. He is currently on DLMA's executive committee.

He was also instrumental in the formation of the
International Executive Service Corps, a group of businessmen
volunteers who provide technical and managerial assistance
to private enterprise in developing-countries. He served as
chairman of this organization from 1964 to 1968 and is
presently a director.
Mr. Rockefeller is also a director of The Business
Committee for the Arts, which he helped form in 1967.
He also helped organize both the Council of the Americas
and the Center for Inter-American Relations, working to
maximize private enterprise contributions and cultural and
intellectual exchanges in the development of Latin America.
He is honorary chairman of the Council of the Americas and
honorary chairman and director of the Center for Inter--
American Relations.
Mr. Rockefeller is also vice chairman of both the
Advisory Council on Japan-United States Economic Relations
and National Council for U.S.-China Trade; member of the
Bulgarian-U.S. Economic Council; member, steering committee
of both U.S.-Egyptian Joint Business Chamber and U.S.-Iran
Joint Business Council; and a director of U.S.-U.S.S.R.
Trade and Economic Council, Inc.
In 1973, Mr. Rockefeller helped found the Trilateral
Commission, an organization designed to promote understanding
and cooperation among the nations of North America, Western

of Reserve City Bankers; Mayor's Financial Liaison Group on
New York City Affairs; and a trustee of the-United States
Council of the International Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
Mr. Rockefeller is also a past president of the Harvard
College Board of Overseers and served as chairman of the
first Commission on White House Fellows, 1964-65.
He is a member of the Century, Harvard, Knickerbocker,
Links, Recess and University Clubs in New York City.

Mr. Rockefeller and his wife, the former Margaret
McGrath, were married September 7, 1940. They have homes in
New York City and Tarrytown, N.Y. The Rockefellers have two
sons, David, Jr. and Richard G., and four daughters, Abby
A., Neva (Mrs. Walter J. Kaiser), Margaret (Mrs. David
Quattrone) and Eileen M.
