(S D) An artillery brigade and a FROG-3/5 battalion were newly identified t two deactivated MRBM sites in the Katta-Kurgan area of the Turkestan Military District (MD), USSR. These two units had probably been withdrawn from Afghanistan. 2. (S/D) The artillery brigade was observed at Kurgancha SSM Launch Position 5 which is approximately 22.0 nautical miles (nm) southwest of Katta-Kurgan (Figure 1). The brigade consisted of the standard two battalions of 130mm field guns M-46 and three battal- ions of 152mm gun howitzers ML-20. This artillery brigade had on inall been housed at Ashkha- bad Army Barracks AL-2/Headquarters Artillery Division The brigade probably did not return to Ashkhabad, because the vehicle park where it had originally been housed was subsequently reoccupied by an unidentified nondivisional signal unit. 3. (S/D) The FROG-3/5 battalion was at Kurgancha MRBM Launch Site 3 which is 26 nm southwest of Katta-Kurgan (Figure 2). Equipment observed included one FROG-3/5 resupply semitrailer, two possible FROG-3/5 transporter-erector-launchers (TELs) on two 40-ton trailers with probable ZIL-157V truck tractors, one empty 40-ton trailer, and two probable URAL-375 cranes. This battalion is probably the one which had left the Kabul, Afghani- stan, are and was observed in transit at Termez, USSR, 4. (S/D) This relocation of units to Kurgancha probably completes the withdrawal of units from Afghanistan that began in late June. Other units identified as having returned from Afghani- Support n MD are a FROG-3/5 battalion at lolotan Army Barracks AL-1 a tank regiment at Samarkand Training Area West-Southwest 1/Tank School and an SA-4 brigade at Ashkhabad Army Barracks West AL-1/SAM 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 LOA-1 25X1 25X1 WNINTEL Z-20052/80 SECRET IAR-A172/80 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/29: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100760001-4 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/29: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100760001-4 Iq Next 1 Page(s) In Document Denied Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/29: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100760001-4 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/29: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100760001-4 Secret Secret Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/29: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100760001-4
