FORMATION OF NEW BRIGADES IN SOUTH YEMEN (S)
1. (S/D) Soviet deliveries of military equipment to South Yemen have increased substantially during
the past year. The quantities and types of equipment as well as the deployment patterns indicate that new
combat brigades have been formed rather than existing ones u raded. Most of the equipment is at Aden
Barracks Training Center and School Salah Al Din Figure 1); this equipment has been
organized to form a FROG-7 brigade, an armor brigade, and an artillery brigade.
FROG-7 Brigade
2. (S/D) FROG-7 equipment (Figure 2) was first seen in South Yemen in September 1979. This
equipment included 12 FROG-7 transporter-erector-launchers (TELs), 24 FROG-7 resupply vehicles, ten
Robotron computer vehicles on UAZ-450 van-bodied trucks, and numerous FROG-7 rockets.
Armor Brigade
3. (S/D) An armor brigade (Figure 3) appears to have replaced the probable training brigade seen at
Aden Barracks Training Center and School Salah Al Din in November 1979. The brigade consists of three
tank battalions. Two of the battalions are equipped with T-54/-55 tanks and one is equipped with T-62
tanks; only elements of a T-62 battalion and of a T-54/-55 battalion are illustrated. The brigade also
includes one BMP (armored personnel carrier)-equipped mechanized infantry battalion, one reconnais-
sance company, one probable signal company, and one motorized transport unit.
4. (S/D) Further evidence that this equipment has been organized to form an armor brigade was
seen at Bir Fugum Military Training Area where two medium-tank battalions have been
observed in six company training formations This is the first time that more than one
tank battalion has been observed in training formation together, indicating that both battalions are part of
the same unit (an armor brigade) rather than from separate units.
Artillery Brigade
5. (S/D) The apparent formation of an artillery brigade (Figure 4)
This brigade consisted of four 130mm M-46 field gun batteries (16 guns), five 122mm
D-30 howitzer batteries, an antitank battalion consisting of 12 BRDM-2 with SAGGER antitank guided
missiles (ATGMs; seven shown on graphic), and one 85/100mm antitank gun battery of three guns. A
multiple rocket launcher battalion consisting of 18 BM-21 rocket launchers was observed with this brigade
