Individual estimates in this issue contain not only statistics for 1977, the latest calendar year of coverage, but also revisions of statistics presented in the past and some statistical series not previously included. For information on sources and methodologies, we refer the reader to earlier publications listed at the end of this handbook. The People's Republic of China has not published statistics systematically since the late 1950s. Frequently, data for the post-1957 years are based on Chinese claims of multiples of figures for an earlier year or increases over a more recent year. As a result, many of the series presented in this handbook are incomplete; they are, however, our best estimates as of the date of publication. Abbreviations used in the charts and statistical tables are as follows: b/d ...................................... dwt ...................................... hp ........................................ kg ........................................ km ...................................... kW ...................................... kWh ....................................
