SS-20 REMOTE SITE AT DROVYANAYA SSM COMPLEX, USSR (TSR)
1. (TSR) On imagery of three confirmed, SS-20 single-bay, sliding-roof
garages were newly identified in a remote area (Figure 1) approximately 15 nautical miles (nm)
northwest of Drovyanaya Rail-to-Road Transfer Point within the Drovyanaya
SSM Complex, USSR These are the first single-bay garages known to have been
constructed outside the Strategic Rocket Force installations. Remote site I is
approximately I nm southeast of the Staraya Kuka Ordnance Supply Depot In
addition to the closely spaced single-bay garages, the remote site consisted of two wooden support
buildings, one small personnel-associated building, and two open-sided sheds. The area is secured
by a single, solid perimeter fence. An access road connects the remote site to a main all-purpose
road about 0.5 nm away. The looped roadway within the site has a prepared surface, but there are
no paving blocks present (Figure 2).
2. (TSR) The garage foundations were visible on At that
time, the access road had been cut, the perimeter security fence erected, and the foundations laid
for the three single-bay and the two wooden garages. A search of 1978 imagery revealed that the
single-bay garages were observed under construction as early as
the garages were observed externally complete. Subsequent identification of photographic signa-
tures and mensuration of the garage components confirmed that the garages were the same as
those observed at SS-20 bases.
3. (TSR) The layout of this remote site seemed to resemble the single-bay garage pattern at
Novaya Mezinovka Missile Support Rear Depot Figure 3). In 1977, three closely
spaced single-bay garages along with support buildings were identified among the trees in a
portion of that depot. The area was also secured by a single, solid perimeter fence, and a resolu-
tion target was in the area.
It is possible that the remote site at
Drovyanaya is the follow-on field example of the concept tested earlier at Novaya Mezinovka and
may be an indication that the Soviets intend to use this technique. This would be an altered
practice from the central basing concept.
